Civilians from the community of Phoenix, in collaboration with eThekwini, held the second phase of the Streamline Project on Saturday, 19 November, at Rainham, Phoenix. They have now launched the second phase of the project, which includes the upkeep, sustainable development and education of civilians. During this event, the stream was handed over to a special management team under the leadership of Logie Naidoo who will be responsible for the upkeep of this stream. “Our efforts are in vain if we do not have a sustainable plan to keep the area clean and to educate the community on the importance of healthy streams and riverine”, says Logie Naidoo.
The second phase of the Streamline Project at the Geenheights stream was successfully implemented on Saturday.Civilians from the community of Phoenix, in collaboration with eThekwini, held the second phase of the Streamline Project on Saturday, 19 November, at Rainham, Phoenix.

The project started on 5 October with a major clean-up operation. With the efforts of Roads and Stormwater; Durban Solid Waste; Water and Sanitation; Environmental Health; Metro Police; Parks, Leisure and Cemeteries; local councilors; and with the support of Area-based management (ABM), most of the waste was cleared.

They have now launched the second phase of the project, which includes the upkeep, sustainable development and education of civilians. on Saturday by Safe Cities, DSW Education, Environmental Health Education and Coastal Stormwater and Drainage. Daleview School is part of this initiative and several educators, parents and learners supported this event.

An agriculture and skills-development project is also underway that will benefit and empower members of the community. The stream in Greenheights is a pilot project that will form at template for all the other streams and riverine in the Phoenix area to be transformed. Meanwhile residents in the area are encouraged to get involved by assisting to monitor the area for illegal dumping or any other crimes.

Local businesses are implored to give back to the community by funding this project. “We want to use this project to create employment opportunities so that the Greenheights Stream can be used for recreational and skills-development purposes”, says Gerda Strydom, chairperson of Safe Cities. She added thanks to Checkers, New Victory Lounge, Mt Edgecombe Syndicate Protection and members of the community for their generous sponsorships.
Safe Cities, a non-profit company focusing on environmental issues, is making progress with their plans to transform the streams and riverine in the Ohlanga and uMhlangane catchments falling under the Phoenix precincts. They are developing a partnership with the Transformative Riverine Management Programme (TRMP), which aims to transform management of over 7400km of streams and riverine corridors, through a community-based and multi-stakeholder approach, in collaboration with The Agence Française de Dévelopement (AFD), Ground Truth and eThekwini Municipality.
